The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted its 28th Apex Council Meeting on June 14, 2025. The meeting saw the passing of a few important resolutions to further enhance the game and respond to the events of recent weeks, including the Bengaluru stampede, during the victory parade of RCB.

The council started with conveying heartfelt condolences on the unfortunate incidents that took place in Ahmedabad (plane crash) and Bengaluru (stampede). The tragedy led to the death of a large number of innocent people.

Action On Bengaluru Stampede

As a response to the chaos during RCB’s IPL 2025 victory celebrations in Bengaluru, the Apex Council decided to form a special committee to create clear guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.

This new committee will be led by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and will also include Prabhtej Singh Bhatia and Rajeev Shukla. The committee has been given 15 days to complete and present the guidelines.

Focus on Improving Umpiring and Refereeing

To improve the standard of umpiring, the BCCI has set up a Working Group of 5 “Umpire Coaches.” These coaches will be former umpires who have experience at the international level. Their job will be to guide and train Indian umpires for better on-field performance.

Similarly, a new Working Group of 3 former Match Referees will monitor and help improve the performance of current referees by offering feedback and support.

Home Series Against New Zealand

The Apex Council confirmed the venues for India’s upcoming white-ball home series against New Zealand, which will take place in early 2026.

Domestic Cricket Season 2025–26 Announced

The council also approved the full schedule for the 2025–26 domestic cricket season. The season will start with the Duleep Trophy on August 28, 2025, and end with the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy on April 3, 2026.

Key Highlights:

  • Zonal Teams: The Duleep Trophy and Senior Women’s Challenger Trophy will now be played by 5 zonal teams picked by zonal selectors.
  • Plate Group Restructuring: Teams ranked lowest in the previous season will be placed in the Plate Group. Only one team will move up or down between Elite and Plate Groups each season.
  • New Tournament Formats: The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Senior Women’s T20 Trophy will now feature a Super League stage instead of a knockout format.
  • Group Structure Updates: Most tournaments will follow a 4 Elite + 1 Plate or 5 Elite + 1 Plate model for fairer competition.
