After the strained geopolitical tensions between India and Bangladesh and the blunt exit of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, the Bangladesh government is now evaluating whether to suspend the broadcast of the Indian Premier League (IPL) within the country.

Notably, the motivation for this decision review follows a suggestion from the Law Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul to keep the tournament off air after Mustafizur Rahman was excluded from participation in IPL 2026.

Bangladesh government official responds to IPL broadcasting dilemma

Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan addressed the matter at a Secretariat media discussion, responding to questions from journalists.

"Unfortunately, politics has been brought into the game. We also need to take a position in this situation," Rizwana told the media.

She noted that while cultural and sports exchanges typically ease diplomatic strains, the opposite had occurred between Bangladesh and India. The adviser referred to reports that the player was dropped for political reasons despite prior confirmation.

"Such a decision, she intended, has hurt the sentiments of people in Bangladesh. She added that officials are examining the legal grounds and procedures before any decision is made.

Will IPL be affected by Bangladesh's ban on broadcasting?

Similar to Bangladesh’s potential move, streaming or broadcasting IPL is also banned in Pakistan due to the geopolitical tension and with things going south, Bangladesh viewers might also meet the same fate.

A possible ban on IPL streaming in Bangladesh is unlikely to cause any major financial damage to the IPL itself, as the country contributes only a small share to the IPL’s massive global broadcast revenue.

IPL’s main earnings come from India and other key international markets, making any loss from Bangladesh commercially limited. While official broadcasters may lose some viewership and advertising income in the Bangladeshi market, the overall impact on the IPL’s multi-billion-dollar media rights deal would be minimal.
