Cricket Australia (CA) have named a strong 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 to be staged in India next month.

As expected Pat Cummins will continue to lead the ODI side in the marquee tournament, with senior players like Steven Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, and Adam Zampa included.

As many as three players have failed to make this cut from the 18-man provisional side — all-rounder Aaron Hardie, bowler Nathan Ellis, and spinner Tanveer Sangha. Sean Abbott was selected ahead of Ellis, while experienced Ashton Agar gets the nod over Sangha.

Warner continues to find his place in the squad despite poor outings while Test specialist Marnus Labuschagne misses the bus again.

As many as four hard-hitting all-rounders in Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, and Cameron Green continue to provide depth in the XI. Josh Inglis and Alex Carey are the only two wicketkeeping options.

In a statement, chief selector George Bailey backed players like Cummins, Smith, Starc, and Maxwell to make a full recovery ahead of World Cup 2023, before submitting the September 28 to ICC.

Here's what Bailey said

"Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are on track in their return to play programs. All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India. There are eight one-day matches still to play in South Africa and India before the final squad is due to be declared. They are followed by two World Cup practice games, which offers plenty of opportunity to continue the build for the tournament.”

Australia begins its World Cup campaign on October 8, as they go up against hosts India at Chennai.

The five-time World Champions are currently in South Africa for a five-ODI series and will travel to India for a 3-match 50-overs series prior to the global showpiece.
