New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has come out in strong support of plans to redevelop Auckland's Eden Park, including adding a roof to shield the ground from rain.

Auckland's Eden Park set for major upgrade with NZC support

Scott Weenink, the chief executive of NZC, has highlighted the renovation as a critical move for sports in Auckland, not just cricket.

"The Eden Park re-development makes much more sense across the board," said Weenink.

He believes that this project will turn the ground into a top venue for major Test matches against cricket giants like Australia, India, and England.

Currently, Eden Park, with its unique oval shape and uneven boundaries, has been more suitable for shorter cricket games like ODIs and T20Is.

It has hosted only one Test match in the last ten years. The proposed changes would transform it into a standard oval that can host any cricket game, making it a "game-changer," according to Weenink.

Adding a roof is a major part of the redevelopment plan, aiming to prevent rain delays that often disrupt games.

Weenink explained, "If Eden Park is redesigned to fit a proper cricket oval and has a roof, then I can see it hosting many more international games."

This push to upgrade Eden Park is also about being smart with resources and environmentally friendly. It's seen as the most efficient choice that supports not wasting energy and reducing emissions.

With the T20 World Cup 2028 on the horizon, where Auckland could host significant knockout games, this redevelopment could greatly enhance New Zealand's ability to host major international events.

As discussions and planning continue, sports fans and officials alike will be keen to see how this ambitious project will evolve.

If all goes as planned, Eden Park could soon be a shining example of how traditional sports venues can adapt and thrive in the modern er to ensure the legacy of cricket continues to flourish in Auckland.
