Fans on Twitter heavily trolled Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan after the duo were dismissed cheaply by Ottneil Baartman. In a sensational spell, the pacer set up both batters in successive overs as the Pakistanis struggled to grapple with the slow wicket of Boland Park.

Pakistan and South Africa competed in the first ODI of the three-game series on December 17. On a slow surface, Heinrich Klaasen’s 86 off 97 balls helped the host finish with a decent first innings total of 239/9.

However, Pakistan had a sluggish start, with just 32 runs scored in the powerplay. To add to the misery, senior batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were dismissed cheaply, thus putting pressure on the youngsters.

Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan faces heat after another twin failure

Babar Azam was undone by Ottneil Baartman’s fuller delivery. A mistimed flick landed in the safe hands of Marco Jansen at short cover. Shortly after Babar departed on 23 off 38 balls, captain Rizwan was cleaned up by a ripper from Baartman. The pacer bowled a length delivery that nipped back and beat Rizwan’s defence as the stumps went flying, thus awarding Baartman his second wicket of the match.

That being said, with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan failing to perform in pressure situations for Pakistan for the nth time, fans lashed out at the seniors on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter.) Many compared them to Indian tailender Akash Deep, who recently rescued India from a follow-on in the Gabba Test between India and Australia.

A user also compared Babar and Rizwan’s downfall to that of Indian superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as they have also been struggling to score runs in Test cricket this year.

Meanwhile, after the seniors disappointed the team, youngster Saim Ayub anchored Pakistan’s chase with a gritty half-century. With over 100 runs still needed, Pakistan’s hope hinges on Ayub and his partner at the other end, Salman Agha.
