Afghanistan cricket team lost to Sri Lanka by more than an over to spare in the final Group B match to bow out of the 2025 Asia Cup Super-Four race. A couple of days after the defeat, the Afghanistan team has now received another major setback, with two of its key spinners receiving a harsh punishment from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Star tweakers Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb Ur Rahman were handed reprimands for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, September 18.
Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Penalized By ICC
Rubbing some salt into the wounds of the Afghanistan cricket team after their Asia Cup 2025 exit, star spin bowlers Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have both been reprimanded by the ICC for breaching Level 1 of the Code of Conduct.
As it happened, Noor Ahmad was found to breached Article 2.8 by showing dissent to an umpire’s decision during the game. The incident occurred during the decisive overs of the Sri Lankan run-chase, when the on-field umpire adjudged one of his deliveries to be a wide.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman, on the other hand, broke the stumps with his towel at one stage of the match. The 24-year-old was later charged with breaching Article 2.2, which relates to the “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing”.
Both Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb Ur Rahman admitted to their offenses and accepted the sanctions as laid out by match referee Richie Richardson. Umpires Asif Yaqoob and Virender Sharma, third umpire Faisal Afridi and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit had levelled the charges against the two Afghan cricketers.
Sri Lanka won the match by six wickets with eight balls to spare while chasing Afghanistan’s 169. Earlier in the game, Mohammad Nabi bludgeoned six sixes in his 22-ball 60 to turbo-charge his team’s innings in the slog overs.
