In an unfortunate turn of events, promising Sri Lanka seamer Pramod Madushan has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan due to injury. Notably, Madushan damaged his hamstring during a training session, which led to his exclusion.

Budding fast bowler Milan Rathnayake has replaced Madushan in the 15-member squad. The 26-year-old, who made his List-A debut in 2017, has scalped 24 wickets in 23 appearances.

Meanwhile, the injury issues continue to haunt Sri Lanka as they start their preparations for the ODI World Cup scheduled in India next year.

While Dushmantha Chameera is still nursing his calf, Dilshan Madushanka is yet to recover from the quadricep injury he sustained before the T20 World Cup. Binura Fernando, who replaced Madushanka, is also rehabilitating from the hamstring injury he developed during the World Cup.

On the other hand, the injury to first-choice seamers offers a golden opportunity to the likes of Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando to impress the selectors and cement their places in the squad.

Regarding the first ODI, Afghanistan have elected to bat first after winning the toss. As of writing, they are placed at 16 for no loss in three overs.
