T20 World Cup 2022: Sri Lanka's report card

After winning the Asia Cup, there were hopes that Sri Lanka might turn out to be the dark horses in the T20 World Cup 2022. But after losing 3 of their 5 matches in the Super 12 stage they have been eliminated from the tournament. 

The Journey of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka started their tournament with a shock defeat against Namibia in their first match of the qualifier stage against Namibia. Then they won three consecutive matches to qualify for the Super 12. 

But in the Super 12 they lost their matches against England, New Zealand and Australia. Victories against Ireland and Afghanistan was not enough to take them through to the next round.

Report Card of T20 World Cup 2022

Pathum Nissanka- 6/10

Innings-7 Runs- 214 Avg- 30.57 SR- 109.18

Pathum Nissanka has played some decent knocks in the tournament and gave some good starts to the team. But his scoring rate was a bit of concern during the World Cup. 

Kusal Mendis- 7/10

Innings-8 Runs- 223 Avg- 31. 85 SR- 142.94

Kusal Mendis was the biggest positive of the Sri Lankan batting in the tournament. He scored consistently and at a very good rate also.

Dhananjaya de Silva- 7.5/10

Innings-8 Runs-177 Avg- 25.28 SR- 129.19

Overs: 12.1 Runs Conceded: 83 Economy: 6.82 Wickets: 6 Avg: 13.83

Dhananjaya de Silva has been the biggest asset of Sri Lanka in this edition of the T20 World Cup. He has delivered for the team with both the bat and the ball. 

Charitha Asalanka-5.5/10

Innings-7 Runs-131 Avg- 26.20 SR- 115.92

Charitha Aslanka had a decent tournament. He did the job of anchoring the innings in some of the matches, but a concern for the team was that he failed to make it big. 

Bhanuka Rajapaksa- 5/10

Innings-7 Runs-125 Avg-17.85 SR-119.04

Bhanuka Rajapaksa is known for his explosive batting in the middle-order. He was entrusted with the job of giving his team the advantage in the middle-overs. But barring one match, Rajapaksa did not have any impactful performance during the tournament. 

Dasun Shanaka- 2/10

Innings-7 Runs-78 Avg-13.00 SR- 105.40

Overs: 3.1 Runs Conceded: 24 Economy: 7.57 Wickets: 1 Avg: 24.00

Dasun Shanaka had a below average tournament from all aspects, be it batting, bowling or leading the team.

Wanindu Hasaranga- 7/10

Innings-6 Runs-25 Avg-5.00 SR-73.52

Overs: 31 Runs Conceded: 199 Economy: 6.41 Wickets: 15 Avg: 13.26

Though, Hasaranga failed to contribute with the bat in the lower order, which is expected of him, he did a fantastic job with ball. He was the biggest pillar of the Sri Lankan bowling throughout the tournament. 

Chamika Karunaratne- 3/10

Innings-6 Runs-32 Avg-8.00 SR-84.21

Overs: 18 Runs Conceded: 144 Economy: 8.00 Wickets: 3 Avg: 48.00

Karunaratne's performance in the tournament was below average throughout the tournament with no real significant performance.

Maheesh Theekshana- 5/10

Innings-3 Runs-11 Avg- 11.00 SR-78.57

Overs: 30.1 Runs Conceded: 202 Economy: 6.69 Wickets: 9 Avg: 22.44

Maheesh Theekshana did the job of containing from one end well, while Hasaranga made use of the pressure to pick up wickets. But overall the impact that he had was less than expected. 

Kasun Rajitha- 2/10

Overs: 11 Runs Conceded: 94 Economy: 8.54 Wickets: 3 Avg: 31.33

Kasun Rajitha fialed to leave an impression as a bowler in the tournament. 

Dusmantha Chameera-6/10

Overs: 7.5 Runs Conceded: 54 Economy: 6.89 Wickets: 4 Avg: 13.50

Dusmantha Chameera looked good with the ball. His injury was unfortunate and really affected Sri Lanka's chances in the tournament.

Lahiru Kumara-5/10

Overs: 20.1 Runs Conceded: 153 Economy: 7.58 Wickets: 7 Avg: 21.85

Lahiru Kumara's performance as a bowler was average in the tournament. 

Pramod Madushan-5/10

Overs: 10 Runs Conceded: 75 Economy: 7.50 Wickets: 3 Avg: 25.00

Madushan gave average performances as a bowler in the chances he got.
