SL vs AFG: SLC announces squad for ODIs; Rajapaksa asks to be released from series

On the eve of the start of the ODI series between hosts Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, the Asian Champions have finally announced a 16-member squad to take on the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led unit in the three-match series. 


The Lankans will play under the leadership of their regular captain Dasun Shanaka, while Dinesh Chandimal and Pramod Madushan have been recalled for this series. However, Bhanuka Rajapaksa has withdrawn himself from the squad - requesting a break from the ODI format. 

As per SLC's official statement, Rajapaksa has requested them to release him from the current squad, as he wants to take a break from ODI cricket. Therefore, Rajapaksa has been released from the squad.

Another notable inclusion in Sri Lanka's squad is Dananjaya Lakshan, who has been named in the place of Chamika Karunaratne - who has recently been banned by the Sri Lanka Cricket due to interdisciplinary issues.

Dasun Shanaka (C), Pathum Nissanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Dananjaya Lakshan, Kasun Rajitha, Maheesh Theekshana, Pramod Madushan, Asitha Fernando, Ashen Bandara, Lahiru Kumara, Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

The matches in the series as both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are dwelling low at seventh and tenth spots, respectively, in the ICC's ODI Super League, of which only the top-eight teams will qualify for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
