Abhishek Sharma has been in red-hot form during the ongoing Asia Cup T20 2025. The Punjab left-hander has been smashing runs at a strike rate of over 200 and is currently ranked No. 1 in ICC’s T20I batting rankings. His explosive performances have now put him in strong contention for a spot in India’s ODI squad.

According to a Times of India report, Abhishek could be handed his first ODI call-up as early as India’s upcoming tour of Australia next month. His aggressive batting style has impressed the selectors and team management, who see him as a valuable option at the top of the order.

Abhishek Sharma In T20Is So Far

Since making his debut in 2024, the 25-year-old has scored 708 runs in 21 T20I innings at a strike rate of 197.21, averaging 35.40. His tally includes two centuries and three fifties.

In the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, he is the tournament’s top scorer so far, with 173 runs from four games at a blistering strike rate of 208.43, despite the slow Dubai pitches. Notably, his fearless approach in the Asia Cup matches reportedly convinced selectors that he can handle pressure at the highest level.

Abhishek isn’t just a power-hitter, he also bowls left-arm spin and has been working hard on his bowling in the nets. In domestic List A cricket, he has scored over 2,000 runs at nearly a run-a-ball strike rate (99.21) and taken 38 wickets, making him a handy all-round option.

If selected, Abhishek would likely be India’s third-choice opener in ODIs, behind Rohit Sharma (who now plays only ODIs) and Yashasvi Jaiswal. He is expected to start as a reserve option.

Notably, India will start their Australia tour on October 1 with a three-match ODI series, followed by five T20Is.
