Dhruv Jurel is set to don the wicketkeeping gloves for Team India in the upcoming fifth Test match of the series against England at The Oval in London. After regular stumper Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the decider owing to an injury, Jurel was called up into the playing XI by the Indian team management as a replacement.
Jurel also kept wickets for Team India for parts of the last two Tests at a time when Pant was struggling with his injury. As the cricketer braces himself for his official Test XI comeback after a gap of eight months, his childhood coach Parvendra Yadav recently credited Indian national coach Gautam Gambhir for backing the youngster.
Dhruv Jurel’s Childhood Coach Thanks Gautam Gambhir
Parvendra Yadav, the childhood coach of Dhruv Jurel, has credited Indian national coach Gautam Gambhir for constantly backing the 24-year-old throughout the ongoing five-match Test series in England. While speaking to the Times of India in an exclusive interview, Yadav said:
“That’s unfortunate news that Rishabh Pant is not there. Jurel has already been tested in the series with the gloves and has scored valuable runs, so it’s going to be a good opportunity for Dhruv. Gambhir has spoken to him and is impressed with his keeping. ‘Mauka milega, ready rehna’ — is what Gambhir told him.”
Parvendra Yadav also revealed that Gautam Gambhir motivated Dhruv Jurel, and described him as the future “backbone of India’s middle-order”. He added:
“Gambhir had a brief chat with him. He motivated him a lot. In fact, he told him, ‘You will be the backbone of India’s middle order.’ 'Jab mauka mile, do better' — that’s what Gambhir said to him. Gambhir hailed him and said, ‘Acha keeping kiya.’ He says every single member of the team is supportive and helpful. 'Mauka milega zarur, intezar karo, keep working hard.’”
Dhruv Jurel made his Test debut back in February 2024 with a match against England in Rajkot, and played the last of his four Tests in November last year in Perth. However, the cricketer did kept wickets for India in Rishabh Pant’s absence in the last two Tests against England. While Jurel picked up three sharp catches in Lord’s, he affected two stumpings and claimed as many catches in Manchester.
India will face England in the series-deciding fifth Test at The Oval in London from July 31 onwards.
