As we fast approach the high-octane ODI World Cup starting in early October, speculations and predictions have started pouring in from the leading cricketing experts.

The inaugural match of the Men’s ODI World Cup will be played between the 2019 World Cup finalists featuring England and New Zealand at the spectacular Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Fans from around the globe hold their breath as they eagerly wait in anticipation for the marquee event to unfold.

The 2019 World Cup turned out to be a memorable campaign for the current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who emerged as the highest run-scorer of the tournament with 648 runs under his belt. David Warner trailed only by 1 run behind Rohit Sharma with 647 runs and 2 centuries to his name. However, the game has evolved since the last World Cup edition with some big names emerging through the ranks in recent times.

In an exclusive conversation with one of his fans, former Proteas captain AB de Villiers identified key players he believes will be the top run-scorers in the upcoming World Cup. He further opined that the criteria for becoming the leading run scorer will be largely determined by the ongoing form and the performance of the players heading into the World Cup.

“It’s a tough one. I am not really sure. There are a lot of guys that can do it. We look at guys who are in form – Babar, Kane Williamson. Obviously, Virat will be up there somewhere along the line. Virat absolutely loves 50-over cricket. His name will be up there for sure.”

AB de Villiers names Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, and Kane Williamson as the top contenders for the leading run-scorer spot ahead of the ODI World Cup.

Virat can be a very destructive batsman once he gets into his groove and his record in home conditions speaks for itself. Babar Azam on the other hand, mirrors Kohli in many ways and looks in phenomenal form off late after his stellar century against Nepal in the opening match of the Asia Cup. Meanwhile, Kane Williamson is recovering from his injury and is expected to be lead New Zealand for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
