In a significant development, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has hinted at possible expansion of the Indian Premier League to 94 matches from current 74 games tournament. According to a report from ESPN Cricinfo, the IPL chairman was asked about the expansion of the league and introducing new teams in the future.

Dhumal shed light on the future plans and revealed that the committee isn't looking to bring more teams and will continue with 10 teams in the IPL. However, he added that the IPL window is set to be extended to 3 weeks from 2028 and it will be a 94-games events, where each team will play against each other in a home and away format structure.

"Ideally, we'd want a larger window, or to maybe go on from 74 to 84 or 94 at some point… So that every team gets to play against every team home and away, for that, you need 94 games", remarked Arun Dhumal.

What Is IPL's Current Structure?

At present, there are 10 teams and not all teams engage in a reverse fixture. Since each franchise play 14 games in the group stage, there is an ambiguity over the scheduling. Currently, teams are divided into two groups where they get to know which team will they meet twice in the tournament before the start of the season.

For example, RCB and MI faced each other just once in this season, but RCB and CSK will face twice. Thus to eliminate this, the IPL is thinking of introducing a home and away fixture from IPL 2028, so that every team can play each other twice.

However, the new changes can't be made before 2028 as the window has already been locked till 2027 according to ICC's Future Tour Program (FTP).
