On Wednesday, India had a disastrous day on the field, as they lost the decider at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo to concede a two-nil ODI series victory to Sri Lanka.

Led by Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue had a challenging start to the series, as the first ODI concluded in a tie. However, they were even poorer with the bat on the next two occasions, failing to chase 240-odd run targets.

The Indian batters' spin playing ability was tested, as they were comprehensively outclassed by Jeffrey Vanderdsay and Dunith Wellalage.

The visitors were not phenomenal with the ball either, as they allowed the hosts to bounce back from precarious situations in all three matches.

However, Rohit is not the only captain to lose an ODI series in Sri Lanka against the hosts, as legendary cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin have achieved the infamous feat in the past.

1993- Azharuddin's India lost to SL by 2-1

On India's 1993 tour of Sri Lanka, the visitors had an outstanding start to the ODI series, as they secured a thrilling one-run victory in the opening game in Colombo.

However, the Lankan Lions made a remarkable comeback, defeating the Indians by eight runs in the subsequent affair.

Despite putting up a more improved performance, India incurred a four-wicket defeat in the decider to concede the series by 2-1.

1997- Tendulkar's men whitewashed by 3-0

Four years later, India once again suffered a shambolic ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka with Sachin Tendulkar at the helm.

The first match was a high-scoring affair where India failed to chase a 303-run target despite scintillating tons from Ajay Jadeja and Mohammad Azharuddin.

The visitors followed it up with a crushing seven-wicket humbling before losing the final ODI by a bare nine-run margin.

After the 3-0 defeat on the 1997 tour, India maintained a clinical record against Sri Lanka, not losing a single series for straight 27 years.

However, the Lankans finally had the last laugh in their backyard on August 7, when they thrashed the Indians by 110 runs to bag the series by 2-0.

Barring Rohit Sharma, none of the Indian batters looked comfortable against the Sri Lankan spinners, as another batting collapse resulted in their devastating defeat in the high-octane series.
