For more than a decade, the Chennai Super Kings never had to worry about the final overs. As long as MS Dhoni walked out in yellow, the last five overs felt like a controlled demolition.

But time is catching up. Dhoni, 44, is older, the squad is younger, and for the first time in years, CSK must rebuild their finishing engine from scratch.

The 2026 retention deadline was a turning point. Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran left in a dramatic double trade with the Rajasthan Royals.

Devon Conway, Matheesha Pathirana, Rachin Ravindra and several others were released. It was a clean sweep, almost a reset button, as they will carry a purse of ₹43.4 crore for the mini-auction.

And amid this reset, CSK’s biggest hole now lies at the back end of the innings. Hence, here are three qualified finishers CSK can target at the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

1. Glenn Maxwell

Australia’s veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has always been cricket’s wildcard. With RCB, his role transformed as he became the man who shifted momentum in overs 14 to 18. In IPL 2021 and 2023, Maxwell struck above 150 consistently, often rescuing RCB from trouble or accelerating a slow innings.

However, with PBKS, he failed, scoring 48 runs in 7 games in IPL 2025. Hence, Punjab have released him from their squad.

Regardless, Maxwell isn’t just a hitter but a mood. When he’s in rhythm, bowlers lose plans, captains lose sleep, and matches flip in minutes.

For CSK, he offers something even more valuable, that is, dual skill. With Jadeja and Curran gone, CSK lost two all-rounders.

Glenn Maxwell gives four overs of off-spin, experience at No. 5 or No. 6, and the fearless intent that MS Dhoni rates so highly.

The Chepauk pitch, which grips and slows down, suits his bowling perfectly. If CSK want a finisher who can also bowl in the powerplay and squeeze in the middle overs, Maxwell is the most complete option.

2. Cameron Green

Next up is Cameron Green. He is not a traditional finisher, but he is tailor-made for CSK’s future. His most memorable IPL knock came in 2023, a brutal 47-ball century for the Mumbai Indians.

For RCB, he scored 255 runs and picked 10 wickets in IPL 2025. However, an injury ruled him out of the 2025 season, and Bengaluru were forced to release him.

But now that he will be back in the IPL 2026 mini-auction, Cameron Green will be in demand. He is a three-phase player who can bat in the middle order, bowl with the new ball, and close out an innings with his height and bounce.

In many ways, he fills the Sam Curran template but with more power and long-term value. At a time when MS Dhoni is nearing the end, CSK need a young player who can grow into a leadership role. Green fits that timeline perfectly.

However, to acquire Green, CSK will have to fight hard with KKR, who are likely to go after the Aussie all-rounder with a much bigger purse.

3. David Miller

When it comes to pure finishing ability, few have been as consistent as David Miller since his Gujarat Titans resurgence. His 2022 season (481 runs at a 142 strike rate) was one of IPL’s finest finishing campaigns. He has mastered the art of chasing, calm early, ruthless late.

With LSG last year, he scored 153 runs in 11 games. While Lucknow have released him, David Miller is an optimal option for CSK to solve their finishing woes.

CSK have always loved left-handers who can dominate spin, just like Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis (not a lefty but mastered it), Ravindra Jadeja, and even Moeen Ali.

Miller fits the script. With Chepauk demanding smart footwork and clean hitting, Miller’s experience becomes gold.
