With PSL 2025 preparations in full swing, questions surrounding the future of certain veteran campaigners have begun to surface. Be it ageing bodies, dipping form, or the unforgiving demands of modern T20 cricket, such factors can often prompt even the most celebrated names to reconsider their paths.

As younger talents rise and the league intensifies, a few seasoned names may quietly be approaching their final chapter in Pakistan’s marquee tournament through the upcoming 2025 season. Here, we analyse four such legendary Pakistani players who might well play their final PSL seasons this year.

1. Shoaib Malik

At age 43, former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik is not getting any younger. While his fitness remains admirable, questions continue to surround his ability to withstand the demands of high-intensity T20 cricket. One of the most seasoned T20 campaigners in the format with 555 caps, Malik recently captained the Sialkot Region in the 2025 National T20 Cup in Pakistan.

Back in PSL 2024 last year, Shoaib Malik accrued 254 runs from 10 innings, albeit at a modest strike rate of 115.98. With the ball, he managed to claim just two wickets, further hinting at a decline in his all-round impact. Considering all factors, the legendary Pakistani all-rounder might consider his PSL retirement following the 2025 edition of the tournament.

2. Shan Masood

The idea of Shan Masood discontinuing his PSL stint may seem a little far-fetched, but the Pakistani Test zealot seems to have better things to do than pursue domestic T20 contracts. Earlier this year, he was stripped of his captaincy by the Karachi Kings management in favour of explosive Australian opener David Warner.

Known for his composed mindset in red-ball cricket, Masood has been striking at just 105.33 and 124.86 in the past two PSL seasons, respectively. Hinting at his fading interest in T20 leagues, the 35-year-old even signed a new County deal with Leicestershire for the upcoming 2025 English season.

Test captain of the national side, Shan Masood’s actions indicate that he wants to enhance his red-ball skills as Pakistan braces itself for the 2025–27 ICC WTC cycle.

3. Imad Wasim

Former Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim announced his retirement from international cricket back in December 2024, i.e., just a few months ago. A veteran of 379 T20 matches, Wasim is another Pakistani journeyman whose career has spanned countless leagues and conditions across the globe.

However, the all-rounder endured a below-par season for his PSL team in 2024, accruing just 126 runs in nine innings and picking up 12 wickets in 12 matches, despite recording a five-wicket haul in between.

Considering his dwindling form, the 36-year-old might contemplate PSL retirement this year after fulfilling his Islamabad United commitment in the upcoming season.

Imad Wasim is already a prominent T20 globe-trotter who has acclimatized well to various lucrative leagues such as the CPL, MLC, Vitality Blast, The Hundred, BBL, LPL, and Abu Dhabi T10. With options at his disposal, he may prefer focusing his energy on global franchise cricket over prolonging his PSL run.

4. Mohammad Amir

Aged 33 and having reached the finals of the ILT20 2025 season a couple of months ago, former Pakistan fast bowler and multi-ICC trophy winner Mohammad Amir has both age and form on his side.

However, Amir might contemplate his PSL retirement soon, considering he has been largely ineffective over the past few seasons. The speedster has plucked just 34 PSL wickets in his last 38 innings spanning four different editions, even though he has proven himself to be a highly sought-after commodity in various global T20 leagues such as the ILT20, CPL, BPL, LPL, The Hundred, and even the Vitality Blast.

Moreover, Mohammad Amir has been vocal about his desire of pursuing a potential IPL contract, once he acquires his British passport. Should he land an IPL gig, Amir would have little incentive to return to the PSL, be it break-wise, scheduling-wise, or most notably, financial-wise.
