Travis Head’s 2025 T20I season hasn’t gone according to plan. His stats are far from the explosive standards he set in ODIs and Tests.

Now as Australia prepares to face India in a five-match T20I series at home, Head will be eager to find his footing.

In 2025, Travis has endured a forgettable run of form in T20Is. He has only scored 70 runs across six matches, at an average of 11.66 and a strike rate of 109.37, with a best score of 31.

For someone who gained fame for his aggressive batting at the top, Head has struggled to find rhythm and timing, often falling cheaply while attempting expansive shots.

He has not managed to convert starts to hurt Australia’s powerplay momentum. Despite the dip in form, there’s reason for optimism.

Travis Head has always been a big-match player, someone who can shift momentum quickly with his natural stroke play.

Against India, he has enjoyed several good outings in the past, especially in powerplay overs when he takes on pace. The upcoming series could be the perfect platform for him to bounce back.

How can Travis Head initiate a comeback vs India?

Target India’s new-ball bowlers early

  • Head’s strength lies in his ability to attack from ball one. Historically, he has done well against bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, who rely on swing rather than raw pace.
  • Head’s hand-eye coordination allows him to dominate bowlers who pitch it up within his hitting arc.
  • In Australia, the ball doesn’t swing for long, especially under lights. That means Head can look to play straight initially and then open up once the seam movement fades.

Use shorter boundaries to his advantage

  • Grounds such as Hobart and Canberra have shorter square boundaries than usual. Travis Head can feed off that targeting the midwicket and square leg areas which are generally areas he hits very well.
  • His powerful pick-up and pull shots have been perfectly made for these venues. Against India’s spinners, he should look to use his feet and hit over midwicket instead of going across the line too early.

Neutralise India’s spinners smartly

  • Travis Head has sometimes struggled against spin, especially off-break bowlers who turn the ball away from him.
  • India are likely to use Kuldeep Yadav or Varun Chakaravarthy in the middle overs to apply pressure. To counter that, Head should look to rotate strike more often rather than go for big shots immediately.
  • When he gets to 20 or 30, he naturally starts finding boundaries. That’s when he can switch gears and use the sweep or reverse-sweep effectively.

Stay aggressive, not reckless

  • When out of form, many batters tend to play within themselves. But Travis Head is not built that way.
  • His best innings have come when he’s played with intent, which is taking calculated risks in the powerplay.
  • Australia will want him to stay true to his natural attacking instincts while improving his shot selection. Even a couple of brisk 30s can bring his confidence back.

Final thought

Travis Head’s current numbers might not look great, but form is temporary and class is permanent. The upcoming series against India gives him familiar conditions, known matchups, and the motivation to make a statement.

If he can combine his fearless approach with smarter targeting of bowlers he’s done well against before, there’s every chance we’ll see the Travis Head Australia loves, which is bold, aggressive, and game-changing.
