Steve Smith took guard for Australia at the stroke of lunch in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final. The cricketer replaced opener David Warner, who scored a sublime 43 at the top of the order.

At 76-3, Smith found an ideal partner in Travis Head, as the two helped Australia regain control of the contest against India’s thriving pace attack. Remarkably, the Australian batting veteran has now scaled a familiar height in his Test career, when he worked Shardul Thakur towards mid-on for a single during the 40th over of the day.

Smith re-accomplishes astonishing Test average

Smith, who averaged 59.80 in Tests prior to the ongoing WTC title shootout, now averages above 60 in the format. The right-handed batter achieved the feat when he reached 29* in the second session of Day 1 against India.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Smith has averaged above 60 in Tests. The former Australian captain has held this astonishing number multiple times in his career. Earlier this year, the cricketer dropped below the landmark figure after sustaining a poor Test series in India.

The charismatic Australian played all four Tests on tough Indian conditions, and returned with just 145 runs at a below-par average of 29. The series marked a dip in his form, which ultimately led to a decline in his overall Test figures.

It was about time the batting maestro regained back his majestic numbers, as his blooming partnership with Travis Head helps Australia take firm control over India’s pace attack on Day 1.

At the time of publishing, Australia reached 170-3 from 51 overs.
