In a recent news, Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will likely miss the upcoming  Champions Trophy 2025. Shakib's participation is in jeopardy as the BCB awaits the results of the second test on his bowling action.

The trouble for Shakib's began after his bowling action was tested at Loughborough University in England last month. He failed to meet the required standards and consequently, he was banned from bowling in both domestic and international cricket. Shakib subsequently underwent a second test in Chennai, and the outcome of this will determine whether he can resume bowling at the international level.

With the Champions Trophy knocking at the door, the team need to finalise their squads by January 12 as per ICC rules. Bangladesh's Champions Trophy campaign begins on February 20 against India in Dubai. If Shakib misses the tournament, Bangladesh could look at several alternatives to fill the void. So, in this article, let's take a look at three players who can replace Shakib for the Champions Trophy 2025.

Hasan Murad

  • Hasan Murad could be the leading candidate to replace the veteran all-rounder in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad. The 23-year-old left-arm spinner is seen as a like-for-like bowling replacement for Shakib and could be a player to watch out for if called up.
  • Murad has been a standout performer in Bangladesh's domestic circuit since his first-class debut in 2021. He has scalped an impressive 139 wickets in 31 matches, including 12 five-wicket hauls. His contribution does not stop here. He has also made 250 runs with the bat in 31 matches with a strike-rate of 23.56.

Nasum Ahmed

  • With uncertainty looming over Shakib Al Hasan's availability for the Champions Trophy, Nasum Ahmed has emerged as a strong contender for a place in Bangladesh's squad. The left-arm spinner is being considered a like-for-like replacement for Shakib, given his orthodox bowling style and effectiveness in subcontinental conditions.
  • Nasum Ahmed has proven himself in the ODI format. In 18 matches, he has taken 16 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 4.48. Additionally, he has demonstrated his ability with the bat, scoring 186 runs at a strike rate of 90.73.

Afif Hossain

  •  Afif Hossain can also be considered as a viable replacement option for Shakib due to his batting prowess. Known for his ability to anchor innings and accelerate when needed, Afif could fill the place left by Shakib’s batting contributions.  Talking about his batting stats, in 34 ODI matches, Afif has made 667 runs at a strike rate of 88.57.
  • While primarily considered for his batting, Afif also offers a part-time bowling option. The right-arm off-break bowler has taken 4 wickets in his ODI career, though with an economy of 5.90. His versatility adds depth to the squad, providing Bangladesh with additional bowling options if needed.
