On Sunday, India had a memorable day on the field as they steamrolled England in the fifth T20I by 150 runs at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After Abhishek Sharma's flamboyant century powered the hosts to 247 for nine, the Indian bowlers' collective effort restricted the tourists to a paltry 97-run total.

Nevertheless, despite India's clinical win in the series, there were some players who couldn't live up to the hype against the Englishmen. As the series has concluded, here are three players who could be dropped from India's T20I setup.

Before we proceed, it's worth mentioning that although captain Suryakumar Yadav flopped in the series, he won't likely be dropped immediately, considering his stellar record in the format.

1. Sanju Samson

  • India's swashbuckling keeper-batter Sanju Samson had a forgettable series against England, as he managed only 51 runs at a horrendous average of 10.20 and a strike rate of 118.60 across five outings.
  • He particularly struggled against high-pace hit-the-deck bowling, succumbing to Jofra Archer and Mark Wood's raw pace. While his opening partner Abhishek Sharma showed massive improvement, Samson let India down with a string of low scores.
  • Considering India have quality openers like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill, who are more comfortable than Samson against raw pace, the latter's place in the team is doubtful in the upcoming T20I assignments. More importantly, it will make little sense if India exclude Abhishek Sharma after such an impressive performance in the final T20I. So, if India consider bringing in either of Jaiswal or Gill, it won't be surprising if he comes at Samson's expense.

2. Dhruv Jurel

  • Samson's Rajasthan Royals teammate Dhruv Jurel also had a poor series against England, scoring only six runs in two innings.
  • Overall, Jurel has batted on three occasions in T20Is, scoring only twelve runs. The right-handed batter hasn't had a great T20 career either, as he has struck 451 runs at a mediocre average of 19.60 in 33 innings.
  • Considering his abysmal T20 record and recent performance in T20 Internationals, India might replace Jurel with someone like Jitesh Sharma in the shortest format.

3. Mohammed Shami

  • After a long injury layoff, India's veteran pacer Mohammed Shami finally made his international comeback through the England T20Is. However, Shami could scalp only three wickets in two matches at an ordinary economy of 9.09
  • Two of his three wickets were tail-enders, while the English batters capitalised on his good-length bowling in the series. Shami was included in the T20I team to get some game time before the ICC Champions Trophy.
  • Considering India have the incredible bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, Shami is unlikely to enter the T20I team in India's upcoming series. Also, given that he is almost 35 and has been injury-prone of late, Shami might've played his final T20I for India.
