The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is just around the corner and with the Champions Trophy getting over on Sunday, the focus will now shift towards the IPL as ten teams will fight it out for the coveted title. However, even before the start of the competition, several sides have suffered injury blows.

During the IPL 2025 auction, one surprising act was the omission of Kiwi star, Tom Latham. None of the teams bought the New Zealand batter as he went unsold. With injuries mounting in the league, we look at 3 teams who can still buy Latham as injury replacements.

Why should teams buy Latham

  • The southpaw may not have best of numbers, but he still has a strike-rate of nearly 130, which is almost equivalent to the strike-rate of some of the best players in IPL history - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
  • He can also be a captaincy material and always performs under pressure and IPL is all about delivering in pressure situations.

1) Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have almost all the bases covered barring the injury to star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah. However, the team also has one issue- the injury to Ryan Rickelton. The South African superstar was injured prior to the Champions Trophy and even though he did participate in the mega event, the opening batter looked a pale shadow of his best.

In case the batter is not fit for the IPL 2025 season, Mumbai could make a move for Latham since both the players are similar in nature. Just like Rickelton, Latham can keep and can also open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma.

2) Rajasthan Royals

The injury to Sanju Samson has created a void in the Rajasthan Royals side. The RR captain suffered from an index finger injury during the T20Is Vs England and underwent a surgery for it. In case he fails to recover on time, RR could draft in Latham, who can form an all lefty partnership alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.

If Samson misses out, RR will be without their keeper as well. This is another role which Latham can do to perfection.

3) Lucknow Super Giants

The Super Giants have not announced any replacement for injured Mitchell Marsh and can go in with Tom Latham as the batter is an excellent player of spin and the Ekana Stadium, the home ground of LSG is more favourable towards spinners.

The above stats are his ODI numbers, but it showcases his ability to play spin really well. In the LSG team, barring Nicholas Pooran and to some extend Rishabh Pant, there are not too many quality players of spin and his inclusions can do wonders for the LSG side.
