Indian captain Rohit Sharma pushed aside his poor form in the ongoing Test series against England by notching a sensational hundred in the first innings of the third Test match on Thursday.

After India had found themselves in trouble at 33-3, Ravindra Jadeja came out to bat at number five and joined hands with the Indian captain. Rohit Sharma paced his innings beautifully by mixing caution with aggression.

The Indian captain forged a game-changing partnership of 204 runs for the fifth wicket with Jadeja and bailed India out of trouble. Sharma notched up his 11th Test century in this process at Niranjan Shah Stadium, playing a sensational knock of 131 runs in 196 deliveries, including 14 fours and three sixes.

Rohit surpasses Tendulkar in the list of most runs as Indian captain

With his stellar knock, he surpassed India’s legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar in the list of most runs for India as captain. Rohit now has 4527 runs as the Indian captain in international cricket.

He surpassed Tendulkar, who has managed 4508 runs. India’s former captain, Virat Kohli, leads the list with 12,883 runs, followed by MS Dhoni (11,207) and Mohammed Azharuddin (8095) at second and third spot, respectively.

Rohit goes past MSD in an elite list

During his enterprising knock, Rohit also went past MS Dhoni, scoring more sixes than him as captain in Test cricket. MS Dhoni has 78 sixes to his name in 90 Tests.

Rohit Sharma surpassed him with 79 sixes in 57 Tests. Virender Sehwag leads the list with 90 sixes in 103 Tests.

Earlier, in the first two Test matches, the Indian captain didn't make great returns with the bat. His scores in the first four innings read: 24, 39, 14, and 13. In the absence of Virat Kohli, the team expected the skipper to take responsibility, but he couldn't produce a significant knock with the bat.

India lost the first Test match, but individual performances from Gill, Jaiswal, and Bumrah helped them level the series. Sharma's century in the third Test helped the Indian notch a big total in the first innings and are currently in a pretty strong position in the Test match.
