Indian captain Rohit Sharma sustained his poor run in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as he was dismissed for another single-digit score in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Opening the batting for India, Rohit could score only three runs before Pat Cummins sent him packing for one more time in the series. 

The talks about Rohit Sharma's retirement intensified on social media following his fourth abysmal outing in the BGT 2024-25. However, it's worth mentioning that there are several Indian players, including Rohit, who might announce retirement from international cricket in 2025, as mentioned below.

  • Rohit Sharma has been struggling with poor form across formats for quite some time now. After leading India to their second T20 World Cup title, Rohit hasn't been the same batter, letting India down with his prolonged rough patch. 
  • He has already bid adieu to T20 Internationals, and considering he is 37 years old, we don't see him playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. So, in all likelihood, Rohit's poor form and age-related fitness concerns will likely lead to his international retirement after the 2025 Champions Trophy.

  • Mohammed Shami was a ruthless force with the ball for India in the 2023 World Cup, powering the hosts to the final with a string of breathtaking performances. 
  • However, an ankle injury followed by a knee injury has sidelined him from action for more than a year now. He was ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and considering the significant delay in his recovery, we don't think he will even make it into India's Champions Trophy squad. 
  • Shami doesn't have the age on his side and given that India have found several young pacers, particularly Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, Yash Dayal and Mayank Yadav, Shami might consider retiring from international cricket next year.

  • India's veteran spin bowler Yuzvendra Chahal once used to be their most potent weapon in the middle overs in white-ball cricket. 
  • However, the seasoned campaigner eventually lost his place in the ODI team due to his poor bowling form and Kuldeep Yadav's resurgence. 
  • Although Chahal recently represented India in T20Is, Varun Chakravarthy's astounding comeback might shut the door for him in the shortest format. In such a scenario, Chahal doesn't seem to have a purpose for playing international cricket. As he will be 35 next year, don't be surprised if he announces international retirement and focuses only on IPL.
