The mega auction is done and dusted and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) despite copping a lot of criticism have made a strong squad for the upcoming IPL season. Ahead of the auctions, they retained Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal, and have invested in quality players this time.

The likes of Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone and Tim David have all been superb buys as the Red Army look to win the IPL title for the first time in their history. In previous seasons, RCB used to focus on buying top stars, rather than investing in their loopholes. However, the story has been different this season.

RCB managamenet have invested in some quality players and have focused on all aspects, unlike previous seasons. Their batting has been upgraded from last season, and in this article, we try and analyse the pros and cons of this RCB batting.

On paper, the batting looks devastating, and is certainly one of the best in the business. The team has plethora of power hitters which will be beneficial in the upcoming season.

Pros of RCB batting

  • Full of power hitters - Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, Tim David, Jacob Bethell, RCB squad is full of power hitters and they will relish batting at the smaller Chinnaswamy stadium.
  • RCB have a strong middle order depth - In previous seasons, they were always top heavy, but lacked firepower in the middle. However, this season, they have focused more on the middle order, with the likes of Jitesh Sharma, Tim David fulfilling the finishers' role.

Cons of RCB batting

  • Inconsistency is the issue: Despite boasting a plethora of talent, RCB's squad will be tested in away conditions, especialy in spinning tracks. The likes of Tim David and Padikkal have issues with spin bowling and scoring truckloads of runs in away matches will come up as a challenge for this side.
  • No replacement for Patidar, Kohli: The squad has just two quality Indian batters, and if one of them gets injured, there is no ideal replacement. Padikkal has struggled to adapt in T20 format, and cannot be relied upon if something happens to Kohli, Patidar.

Conclusion and rating

The investment unlike previous seasons have been shrewd, but the players have been bought, keping in mind only the home conditions. The batters will be tested in away conditions, and this is where RCB batters will struggle. With no quality Indian backup, and question mark over the team's ability to play spin, the rating for the RCB batting will be 7.
