In a phenomenal achievement, veteran off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin overtook legendary former cricketer Anil Kumble to record the most five-wicket hauls for India in Test cricket.

The experienced campaigner unlocked the feat on day 3 of India's ongoing Test match against England at HPCA stadium in Dharamsala.

In response to India's first innings total of 477 runs, England had a shaky start to their innings, with Ashwin blowing away their top order in quick succession.

After dismissing Ben Duckett in his first over, the spin maestro got rid of Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope before castling English skipper Ben Stokes.

In the post-lunch session, Ashwin took a little time to castle Foakes and register his 36th five-wicket haul, the most by an Indian in Test history.

Most Test fifers for India

  • R Ashwin - 36 fifers in 100 matches
  • Anil Kumble - 35 fifers in 132 matches
  • Harbhajan Singh - 25 fifers in 103 matches
  • Kapil Dev - 23 fifers in 131 matches
  • BS Chandrasekhar - 16 fifers in 58 matches

Riding on Ashwin's incredible bowling performance, India have reduced England to 129 for six in 30.4 overs, with Joe Root and Tom Hartley unbeaten in the middle.

The visitors are still trailing India's first innings total by 126 runs, staring at a humiliating innings defeat to conclude the tour.
