It's time for another high-profile encounter in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are getting ready to take on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This clash, which features stalwarts from both sides, will be played on Saturday, the 3rd of May 2025, from 7:30 PM IST.

The RCB are roaring in this competition with seven wins in 10 games so far. They are third on the table with 14 points and a very healthy net run rate of +0.521. Conversely, the Super Kings are already eliminated with just two wins in 10 matches after having lost eight of their matches and are playing to spoil the party for the other teams.

Therefore, with that in mind, let's have a look at some player battles that could play a major role in this clash between RCB vs CSK.

1. Rajat Patidar vs R Ashwin

Average12.50
Strike Rate 96.25
  • RCB's Rajat Patidar has been in decent form in this edition of the IPL with 228 runs already in 10 games at a strike rate of 147.09. However, when it comes to a matchup with CSK's off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, Patidar has been dismissed twice out of four occasions while he's only been able to manage 25 runs against him off 26 deliveries.
  • Highlighting the trouble for him playing against Ashwin, he has a strike rate of just 96.25 and an average of 12.50.
  • As Patidar bats two places down in the batting order, the spinner should be immediately brought in to keep the right-hander quiet for the longest time possible, considering he is an aggressive player of spin and would likely go after Ashwin, even if the matchup doesn't favour him.

2. MS Dhoni vs Josh Hazlewood

Strike Rate 183.33
  • Josh Hazlewood versus MS Dhoni is another interesting matchup in this encounter, which would most likely be seen in the death overs, as Dhoni is likely to bat the final few overs of the game, and that is when Hazlewood is at his prime best.
  • The Aussie pacer, who has been in prime form in this IPL, has bowled six deliveries to MS Dhoni to dismiss him once out of two occasions, as he has only scored 11 off those. As Dhoni likes to go big right from the start in the death overs, Hazlewood would be quite handy for the RCB side, as he has done a tremendous job so far, keeping his lines tight.
  • Dhoni will likely have to alter his game plan against the Aussie pacer who is known to be canny with the ball, as his perfect yorkers are nearly impossible to hit, while his change of pace can be extremely tricky to conquer.

3. Phil Salt vs Noor Ahmad

Strike Rate 50.00
  • Although the sample size is short, RCB's Phil Salt has been sent back to the pavilion by CSK's Noor Ahmad once after bowling him just two deliveries. Salt is an aggressive opening batter and in this edition of the IPL for RCB, he has scored a total of 233 runs in just nine outings.
  • Whereas Noor has been CSK's prime weapon with the ball, despite having an off season on the points table, the Afghan spinner, who has featured in ten games so far, has 15 wickets to his name and that is where the valued match-up comes to the fore.
  • Salt can be highly aggressive in the powerplay and bringing in Noor to start is something that CSK could look at, considering Salt's prized wicket could prove beneficial for this five-time champions, as quite a few runs could be curbed if this match-up works in CSK's favour early on in the innings.

4. Virat Kohli vs Khaleel Ahmed

Criteria
Data
Innings5
Runs34
Wickets1
Balls

Average34.00
Strike Rate 147.82
  • One of CSK's most consistent bowlers in this IPL, Khaleel Ahmed, has been terrific, especially in the powerplay while Virat Kohli has been magnificent too with the bat, scoring fifties after fifties in this competition.
  • When it comes to the match-up, Khaleel has dismissed Virat just once in five occasions as Kohli has scored 34 runs off 23 deliveries he has faced off the left-arm pacer. The average of 34 and strike rate of 147.82 reflects that Kohli generally bats decently against Khaleel and is not bothered by the left-arm angle at the beginning.
  • For this to work, Khaleel will have to swing the ball as Kohli is generally troubled by the ball moving at the beginning of the innings, reflected by his past outings against swinging deliveries.
  • If Khaleel gets the ball to shape, then Kohli will have to be cautious, especially in the first few overs but then, if he sees off the new ball, the right-hander can come on his own terms and dominate the rest of the innings, like he has usually been in this edition of the IPL 2025 with steady and consistent performances for his side.

5. Devdutt Padikkal vs R Ashwin

Criteria
Data
Innings3
Runs16
Wickets2
Balls
19
Average8.00
Strike Rate 84.21
  • RCB's Devdutt Padikkal is a magnificent performer with some valued contributions to his side, especially coming one down the order. However, when it comes to playing against Ashwin, Padikkal has been sent back to the pavilion twice out of three times he has faced the off-spinner.
  • Moreover, he has managed to score just 16 runs off the 19 deliveries he has played against him, with a strike rate of just 84.21. This means that Ashwin's match-up against the left-hander could work if he's brought at the right time, especially in the powerplay when Padikkal generally comes in to bat after the fall of a wicket.
  • Whereas Padikkal would be wary of R Ashwin's threat and would likely look to rotate the strike rather than going aggressively against the spinner.
