'He Can Open': Shane Watson Picks This Player As David Warner's Successor

With David Warner retiring after the ongoing Sydney Test against Pakistan, Cricket Australia will soon need to name an ideal replacement for the opener's position for the upcoming two-Test series against West Indies.

Several names like Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, and Matt Renshaw are potential candidates, however, as indicated by captain Pat Cummins and head coach Andrew McDonald, Australia could push all-rounder Cameron Green into the opening slot.

Former all-rounder Shane Watson, who himself gained success while opening in Tests, has backed Green's promotion up top.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Watson stated that Australia needs someone like Green in the XI and that he has all the skills to open the innings.

"There's no question in my mind he can [open]. Australia needs to get Cameron Green into the team and the opportunity that you've got right now is for him to open. They'll just have to manage his bowling, for sure, like with my bowling when I was opening the batting."

"He absolutely has got the skill, the run-scoring ability and the understanding to be able to make the most of being an opening batter for sure. It might take him a game or two just to be able to work out exactly what his game plan is. But he's definitely got the game and the mentality to make the most of it."

In 24 Tests, Green has slammed 1,045 runs and claimed 30 wickets since making debut in 2020. However, he has been missing from the Test arena since playing the fourth Test against India in Ahmedabad.
