Earlier today, Cricket Australia announced a robust men's squad for the first Test of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India at home. Led by Pat Cummins, the hosts have named a balanced team that can give the visitors a run for their money. While swashbuckling keeper-batter Josh Inglis received his maiden Test call-up, promising batter Nathan McSweeney also found a place in the star-studded team. So, as the hosts gear up for the series opener, let's see what could be their strongest combination for this match.

Steve Smith To Spearhead Australia's Batting Unit

Veteran left-handed batter Usman Khawaja will open the batting alongside Nathan McSweeney, who will replace David Warner at the top order. Gritty batter Marnus Labuschagne will be slotted at number three, with the legendary Steve Smith following him at number four.

Hailed highly for his text-book batsmanship, Smith has an excellent Test record against India and will once again be the backbone of the Australian batting unit. Meanwhile, the explosive batting duo of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh will play the enforcer's role in the middle order.

With Cameron Green absent, Marsh could also be asked to chip in with a few overs of medium pace. He will be a crucial player for Australia in Perth, as can capitalise on his home advantage and contribute handily with bat and ball. Head will be one of the biggest headaches for team India, as he can change the course of the match with his scintillating stroke play.

Cummins To Lead Australia's Formidable Bowling Attack

Regarding Australia's bowling department, it will consist of the four most familiar faces- Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, at least in the series opener. While Starc brings sheer pace and new ball swing into the table, Cummins and Hazlewood will be Australia's most valuable assets on Perth's spicy track. Meanwhile, Nathan Lyon is also expected to play a pivotal role with his overspin.
