Maxwell still in demand; 5 released players who can bag higher salary in IPL 2026 auction

The pundits are busy analysing the IPL trends in the past couple of days, as shocking retentions and releases have rocked the cricketing world. Across teams, a total of 173 players have been retained, including 49 overseas players. A combined purse of ₹237.55 crore will be available at the auction for a total of 77 player slots.

Some of the shocking releases were Andre Russell, Matheesha Pathirana and Ravi Bishnoi. However, the idea behind such decisions is assumed to be to re-buy them at a lower price.

Although there are a few out-of-favour big names who have been released, they can actually trigger a bidding war and fetch more money than expected.

1.Sediqullah Atal

In 2025, Delhi Capitals made a late change to their squad and roped in Afghanistan's Sediqullah Atal to their team for 1.25 crores, replacing Harry Brook, who fled to England because of personal reasons.

The 24-year-old played just a solitary game and amassed 22 runs. Eventually, DC decided to part ways with the Afghanistan star. However, the southpaw has been in some form since IPL 2025.

Atal slammed a fifty in Asia Cup 2025 and also shone in the tri-series against Pakistan and UAE. Let's look at Sediqullah Atal's form post IPL 2025.

Thus, it is expected that the Afghan star fetches more salary than he did in IPL 2025.

2. Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been a curious case in IPL. The star Afghanistan opener made his debut in the cash-studded league in IPL 2023 and immediately rose to form with 227 runs in just 11 innings.

However, post that event, Gurbaz became just a backup option for the Knight Riders since IPL 2024. The three-time winners started with Phil Salt and switched to Quinton de Kock in IPL 2025.

In the last two seasons as a backup, Gurbaz hasn't done well, but if he is set to switch to a new team, where he gets the opportunity to be the frontline, then Gurbaz can fetch a lot of interest as several teams are still looking for opening options, which include the likes of DC and KKR.

3. Glenn Maxwell

Surprisingly, Glenn Maxwell has been released by the Punjab Kings just after a solitary season. PBKS bought the Australian all-rounder for 4.2 crores. Glenn indeed deserved to be released because of the way he is performing, but the star all-rounder continues to be in high demand.

Notably, Maxwell played just seven games and scored 48 runs, averaging a pathetic 8. However, given his personality, a lot of teams require an explosive middle-order batter and a player who can also bowl.

Notably, the likes of CSK, KKR, LSG, and SRH need a lower-middle-order batter who can bowl spin. Thus, Maxwell is likely to trigger a bidding war among teams and actually earn more money than expected.

4. Tim Seifert

It was shocking to see RCB not retaining Tim Seifert, as the right-handed batter is in some fine form since IPL 2025. Notably, the New Zealand keeer-batter came in as a replacement for Jacob Bethell, but failed to prove himself in IPL 2025.

However, the right-handed batter is certain to bag a lot of money in the IPL 2026 auction because of his post-IPL show.

5. Abhinav Manohar

Abhinav Manohar was brought in by SRH for 3.20 crores, but had a terrible IPL 2025, where he amassed just 61 runs in five innings.

However, similar to Tim Seifert, Manohar had excellent outings post IPL 2025. In the Maharaja Trophy, Manohar scored 284 runs in 11 innings, and 211 runs in 5 innings in Ranji Trophy 2025-26.
