Dunith Wellalage, The Next Big Thing In Sri Lankan Cricket?

The country has one of the finest spinners in Wanindu Hasaranga, and now it has another superstar spinner in the form of Dunith Wellalage. Ever-since his 5-wicket haul Vs India in the Asia Cup 2023, the youngster has been fast-tracked, and he has reaped the reward with a stellar performance against Rohit Sharma's India in the just concluded 3-match ODI series.

In the first game, Sri Lanka were in a precarious situation, tottering at 101/5, when Wellalage raised his hands and scored a blinder (67 off 65) which helped Sri Lanka post a respectable total. Also, he chipped in with wickets as Sri Lanka tied the first ODI match.

Once again in the second match, Sri Lanka lost early wickets, and Wellalage scored a crucial 35-ball 39 as SL took a 1-0 lead in the series. In the third and the final ODI match, he failed to chip in with the bat, but showcased huus skills with the ball, picking up a 5-wicket haul to seal a famous series win for the Island Nation.

Sri Lankan cricket is in the right hands, and the game needs to revolve around Wellalage. He can be their next Sanath Jayasuriya, if groomed properly.
