SRH to go for IPL 2025 mega auction with INR 45 crore purse [Source: @gujarat_titans,@itxcheemrag/X.com]
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) fixed 5 retentions at the deadline and cashed out INR 75 crores. For the IPL 2025 mega auction, the former runners up will have a remaining purse for INR 45 crores.
After much hustle and failure, SRH finally set up a winning combination. With Pat Cummins leading a balanced lineup, SRH finished as runners up in IPL 2024 season. Hence, the team management retained the core i.e Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Pat Cummins, and Nitish Reddy.
As for the IPL 2025 mega auction, SRH will be mindful of financial constraints. They secured the batting core which suggested that SRH will refrain from going after top batters from the marquee set, which is Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer.
However, with only Nitish Reddy and Cummins left as a bowling option, SRH will have to build a bowling attack from scratch with the available INR 45 crores. Out of the two marquee sets, Mitchell Starc and Mohammad Shami are two players that could spark interest from SRH.
Will SRH Choose Shami Over Starc?
SRH have INR 45 crores available, out of which a significant chunk will go to a proper specialised bowler. Notably, with Head, Cummins, and Klaasen retained, SRH's overseas limit is nearly exhausted. They have room for only more overseas players in the playing XI. Hence, it's possible that SRH will choose Mohammed Shami over Mitchell Starc.
Shami's Price Tag Will Be Less
Another aspect that makes Mohammed Shami an ideal fit for SRH is his lower market value triggered due to his injury history. Shami didn't play competitive cricket for 10 months after getting injured in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Just last week, he resumed playing Ranji Trophy with Border Gavaskar Trophy participation also uncertain. Hence, Shami might not intrigue most franchises. GT, his previous team, have RTM cards to steal Shami. However, SRH can bag him at a lower price compared to Starc.
Does SRH Need Any Other Marquee Player?
Besides Mohammad Shami, SRH can target Yuzvendra Chahal to fill the gap of a quality spinner. A quality spinner can be any team's trump card in the IPL. And Chahal has proven success in the league so far. Mohammad Siraj also remains an option, given that RCB does not use an RTM card to retain him.
Conclusion
All things said and done, SRH will definitely target a quality bowler, both spinner and pacer, at the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction table. The big names such as KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer are of no use to them as their core is already settled. Hence, Starc, Shami, Siraj, and Chahal are a few marquee players SRH will target in Jeddah.
