The Gujarat Titans played against the Rajasthan Royals in the 24th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). The game went down to the last ball and will be remembered as one of the IPL classics as GT won it by three wickets.

The Titans won the toss and opted to field first. Even though the Royals lost Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the innings, Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag played two brilliant knocks. They helped RR reach a formidable total of 196/3 in 20 overs.

B Sai Sudhharsan and Shubman Gill got GT off to a great start in the chase. It looked like GT would cruise through to victory at the halfway stage of the second innings. But three wickets in a span of 15 runs put them in trouble. However, the GT batters made it a point to keep up with the scoring rate and did not let the momentum drift. Ultimately, Tewatia's cameo and Rashid Khan's brilliance with the bat took GT past the finishing line.

The Rise of Kuldeep Sen as a Hero

  • Kuldeep Sen was brought into the attack in the ninth over when the GT were stationed at 63 for no loss. He picked up the wicket of B Sai Sudharsan in this over and drew the first blood for his team.
  • In the second over of his spell, the 10th over of the innings, Sen dealt GT a double blow, picking up Matthew Wade and Abhinav Manohar. This got GT in trouble, and it looked like RR would go on to win the match from here, but alas, it was not to be.

Avesh joins Kuldeep in a disastrous death-over show

After the three quick wickets fell, the onus was on Shubman Gill to carry it through. He did his job perfectly and took the game deep even when he was losing out of partners. He got Rahul Tewatia with him along the way, who played the perfect second fiddle.

After Gill's departure, Tewatia kept going and was eventually joined by Rashid Khan, who upped the ante at the correct stage. The match came down to a stage when the Titans needed 35 runs off the last 12 balls. It was at this stage Kuldeep Sen was brought into the attack. We can put it down to anything like the lack of experience or the absence of composure, but he bowled a horrible 19th over, where he conceded 20 runs, including a no-ball. This left 15 runs for the last over, which Avesh gave away. The two bowlers lost the plot as they missed the yorkers and stuck to a unidimensional plan.

Even though Kuldeep gave away 20 runs in the 19th over and was a significant cause behind RR's defeat, he was the sole reason RR made their way back into the game in the middle overs. So, even though Kuldeep Sen stands as a match criminal here, he is a bright prospect for Indian cricket.

On the other hand, Avesh Khan, who did a decent job in the death overs in IPL 2024, had a bit of a brain fade moment in the last over. Though it was good to see him trusting his abilities with the Yorker, he forgot to use his experience and vary his length and pace. However, matches like these give you the experience of being a better bowler, and it is expected that Avesh will learn from this.
