India have had a tremendous Champions Trophy campaign, securing consecutive wins over Bangladesh and Pakistan. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue have already confirmed their place in the semifinal of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Australia qualified for the semifinal following their abandoned fixture against Afghanistan at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.

Why Would India Not Like Facing Australia And Head?

  • Since 2023, India have played eight ODIs against Australia, losing four of those matches. More importantly, Australia defeated India in the final of the 2023 World Cup and World Test Championship. Therefore, Australia have the mental edge over their Indian counterparts as far as the knockout matches are concerned.
  • Furthermore, while India have been clearly a better T20I side in this period, Australia have been more successful in the longer formats, winning nine and losing only seven matches in Tests and ODIs against India since January 2023.
  • So, although India should be ready to take on any side in the semifinal, South Africa and Afghanistan could be the ideal opponents for them more than Australia.

(Travis Head's Exceptional Record vs India)

  • Travis Head has been a force to reckon with the bat for Australia against India, as evidenced by the above stats.
  • He is a genuine match-winner in white-ball cricket and his blistering start could be match-defining in Dubai, where run-scoring has been a tough task for the batters in the tournament.
  • So, considering he enjoys playing against India and his scintillating stroke play might shatter India's Champions Trophy dream, the Men in Blue wouldn't want him up against them in the semifinal.

In such a scenario, here we explain how can the Men in Blue evade facing the Aussies, particularly Head, in the all-important semifinal.

Case- 1: If South Africa defeat England

If South Africa win today's match against England, they will finish as the top-ranked team in group-B. On the other hand, if India lose against New Zealand tomorrow, they will finish as the second-placed team in group-A. In such a scenario, India will face the Proteas in their semifinal encounter at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

On the contrary, if South Africa defeat the Englishmen, but India also win their final group-stage match against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma and co. will take on Australia in the semifinal.

Case-2 : If England defeat South Africa

Meanwhile, if England emerge victorious against South Africa today, the Aussies will enter the semifinals as the top-ranked team from group-B. If India lose tomorrow, they will finish second on group-A standings and face Australia in the semifinal.

But if England win today and India swat aside New Zealand in their final group-stage clash, the Men in Blue will take on either South Africa or Afghanistan (whichever team qualifies for the semis based on NRR) in their semifinal clash.
