The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is coming to an exciting end, with the final match set for Tuesday, June 3 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings.

This season has been thrilling, filled with drama and unforgettable moments. However, while some players have shone, others have struggled badly. A few well-known names didn’t live up to expectations and might not get a chance to play in IPL 2026. So, here are some of the big players who might not be picked for the upcoming season:

1. Ravichandran Ashwin (Chennai Super Kings)

R Ashwin was bought by CSK for a big amount, ₹9.75 crore. But he didn’t have a great season. He only scored 33 runs in 4 matches and took 7 wickets in 9 games, with a high economy rate of 9.13. CSK didn’t even make it to the playoffs this year and finished at the bottom of the table for the first time ever.

Ashwin is also getting older, he’ll be 39 next year and has already retired from international cricket. His recent form hasn’t been very impressive, and he’s been seen as a more defensive bowler in T20s. So, it’s likely CSK might let him go ahead of next season.

2. Glenn Maxwell (Punjab Kings)

Glenn Maxwell was bought by PBKS for ₹4.20 crore after being released by RCB. However, he had another poor season. In 7 innings, he scored just 48 runs with a low strike rate of 97.94. He did manage to take 4 wickets in 6 innings, but overall, he didn’t contribute much.

Maxwell is known for being a powerful hitter, but his performances in the IPL have been very up and down. While he’s done well in a few seasons, he has also had several years with very low scores. His inconsistency may lead teams to think twice about picking him next year.

3. Deepak Hooda (Chennai Super Kings)

Deepak Hooda also had a disappointing season. He scored only 31 runs in 5 innings, with a low strike rate of 75.61. Even last season wasn’t great for him, he made 145 runs in 11 innings for LSG.

Bought for ₹1.7 crore, Hooda was expected to strengthen the middle order, but he failed to deliver. CSK might start looking for other players to fill his spot in the next auction.

4. Ishant Sharma (Gujarat Titans)

Ishant Sharma was bought by Gujarat Titans for ₹75 lakh. At 36 years old, he still bowls at a good pace, but this season he only played 7 matches and took 4 wickets. His economy rate was also on the higher side, making him an expensive bowler to keep in the team.

Due to his age and limited impact this season, GT may decide to invest in a younger Indian fast bowler instead of retaining him.

5. Faf du Plessis (Delhi Capitals)

Faf was signed by Delhi Capitals for his base price of ₹2 crore. He scored 202 runs in 9 matches, which isn’t terrible, but not great for an opener either. His strike rate was just around 120, and that’s considered slow for a T20 game.

Faf will turn 41 next year, and with age catching up, his performances have dipped. Delhi Capitals might want to bring in younger players for the top order and free up an overseas player slot for someone more explosive.
