Famous Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is in the spotlight again, this time not for cricket, but because of his pub in Bengaluru. The pub, called One8 Commune, which Kohli co-owns, is facing legal action for not following smoking rules.

The Cubbon Park Police have taken legal action on their own (called a suo-moto case) against One8 Commune. They say the pub broke rules under a law called the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). According to the ANI report, the pub does not have a separate smoking area, which is required by law.

What Law Did Virat Kohli's Bengaluru Pub Break?

The pub has been charged under Sections 4 and 21 of COTPA. These sections deal with smoking in public places and the need for designated smoking zones in restaurants and bars.

This move by the Karnataka Police follows the State government's decision to impose a complete ban on hookah bars and raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco products from 18 to 21. The government's Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Amendment) Act, 2024, was recently approved by the President.

Well, this isn’t the first time One8 Commune has been in trouble. In June 2024, police filed a case against the pub for staying open past legal hours. Meanwhile, in December 2024, the BBMP (city corporation) sent a notice to the pub for not having fire safety clearance from the Fire Department.

The pub’s name, One8, comes from Virat Kohli’s jersey number, 18, which is special to him. The word Commune was chosen to reflect a friendly, community vibe, a place where people can come together, eat, relax, and have a good time.
