Cricket Australia has unveiled its 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, which kicks off on February 19, 2025. Australia will compete in the group stage against Afghanistan, England, and South Africa, with matches set in Lahore and Rawalpindi. Before the main event, they’ll play a warm-up ODI against Sri Lanka in Hambantota on February 16, shortly after their second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
The Aussies are aiming to reclaim the Champions Trophy title, their first since 2009. This edition’s format, last seen in 2017, will have the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals, with the grand finale scheduled for March 9 in either Lahore or Dubai.
Australia’s squad prioritises all-round abilities, showcasing a blend of experience and versatility. However, this tournament could mark the final Champions Trophy appearance for some veteran players. Let’s look at three such players who might bid farewell to this prestigious event.
1. Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell has been an integral part of Australia’s white-ball team for years. Well-known for his explosive batting and handy off-spin, Maxwell was one of the standout performers in the 2023 World Cup. However, his recent form has been inconsistent.
In ODIs, Maxwell has scored 3,950 runs in 133 innings with four centuries, averaging 34.05—below the standard of modern cricket. At 36 years old, age isn’t on his side, and his declining performances in recent years raise doubts about his longevity in international cricket.
While Maxwell might still be in contention for the 2027 ODI World Cup, it’s highly unlikely he’ll make it to the 2029 Champions Trophy at the age of 40. The 2025 edition could very well be his swan song in this tournament.
2. Steve Smith
Steve Smith, the former Australian captain who led the side in the 2017 Champions Trophy, is another player nearing the twilight of his career. Over his illustrious ODI career, Smith has scored 5,662 runs in 149 innings, with 12 centuries and an impressive average of 43.55.
However, like Maxwell, Smith’s age—he’ll be 35 during the 2025 Champions Trophy—is a factor. His performance in this tournament could determine his future in ODI cricket. If he doesn’t perform up to expectations, there’s a strong possibility that he might retire from the 50-over format after the Champions Trophy.
By the time the 2029 Champions Trophy rolls around, Smith will be 40, and Australia’s selectors are likely to turn their focus to younger players.
3. Marcus Stoinis
Marcus Stoinis, Australia’s dynamic all-rounder, has been part of the Champions Trophy squad since 2017 and will feature again in 2025. While his big-hitting and versatility are assets, his ODI stats have been underwhelming.
In 71 innings, Stoinis has scored 1,495 runs with just one century, averaging 26.69—far below what’s expected from a player of his caliber. At 35 years old, he’s also nearing the end of his career. Although Stoinis has a knack for delivering in key moments, his inconsistency and age make it unlikely he’ll play another Champions Trophy after 2025.
