In the latest development around Australian cricket, star batter Steve Smith has been hit with an injury, during his BBL side's last group stage match of the season. Notably, playing for Sydney Sixers, Smith felt discomfort in his elbow while fielding.

In the Sydney Derby between Sixers and Thunder, the David Warner-led side was batting first and only five overs were bowled as the game was abandoned because of bad weather. Nonetheless, Smith had injured his hand and Cricket Australia are sweating hard as they have the Sri Lanka series coming up as well as the crucial Champions Trophy 2025.

At present, the reports from CodeSports mention that Smith will meet a specialist and only then the extent of his injury would be known. The current plan is for Smith to join the Australian side in Dubai next week to prepare for the Sri Lanka Test series that begins on January 29.

In case the severity of the injury is bigger than expected then, Australia would sideline Smith from the dead rubber series to keep him fresh for Champions Trophy 2025. In that scenario, Travis Head, who has been named as the vice-captain, will lead the side.

Australia Hit With Several Injuries

It is not the best time to be an Australian fan as they have been hit with several injuries. Firstly, skipper Pat Cummins himself is out of the series because of an ankle injury that also puts him in doubt for the Champions Trophy 2025.

Further, Mitchell Starc also had a slight niggle in his back during BGT, while Josh Hazlewood is also facing a race against time to get fit in time for the Champions Trophy.
