ENG vs AUS, 3rd ODI Match Prediction: Who Will Win Today's Match?

England will face Australia in a must-win encounter on Tuesday, September 24, at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, as the third ODI of the five-match series looms large.

England Looking To Stay Alive In The Series

Led by Harry Brook in the absence of their regular captain Jos Buttler, England has failed to meet expectations, having been trounced in the first two ODIs. Brendon McCullum's tenure as white-ball head coach hasn’t exactly hit the ground running, with England struggling to find their footing.

After being soundly defeated by seven wickets in the opening match, England faltered once again in the second ODI, falling short by 68 runs. Now, they must pull a rabbit out of the hat to keep the series alive.

In the second match, Australia posted 270 after being sent in to bat. Brydon Carse was the standout performer for England, picking up 3/75, while Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, and Jacob Bethell chipped in with two wickets apiece.

England’s reply with the bat, however, was a tale of woe. Opener Phil Salt departed early for just 12 runs, and although Ben Duckett showed promise with a brisk 32 off 25 balls, his dismissal left England wobbling.

Will Jacks departed for a golden duck, and to make matters worse, captain Harry Brook managed just four before being sent packing. Liam Livingstone also was sent back without troubling the scorers.

Jamie Smith top-scored for the hosts with 49. Small contributions came from Carse (26), Bethell (25), and Rashid (27), but they weren’t enough as England crumbled to 202 all out, handing Australia a 68-run victory.

Australia Aiming To Seal the Deal

Alex Carey was the architect of Australia’s innings, scoring a brilliant 74 off 67 balls, while captain Mitchell Marsh added a captain's knock of 60 to the tally. Matthew Short and Travis Head provided valuable contributions, but Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Glenn Maxwell misfired, leaving room for improvement ahead of the third ODI.

In the bowling department, Mitchell Starc’s fiery bowling saw him claim three wickets, putting the final nail in England’s coffin in the second game. Josh Hazlewood, Aaron Hardie, and Glenn Maxwell each chipped in with two wickets to stifle England’s chase.

Australia, riding high, will aim to wrap up the series with two games to go. Carey’s brilliant knock and Marsh’s leadership have given them the upper hand.

Despite key batters like Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Glenn Maxwell failing to fire, Australia still finds itself in the driver’s seat. With momentum firmly in their favour, the visitors are on course to secure a memorable series win. Still, as cricket has repeatedly shown, it’s never over until the fat lady sings.

How Will the Riverside Ground Pitch Behave?

The Riverside Ground is expected to offer a balanced contest between bat and ball. Pacers will enjoy assistance with the new ball, while spinners should come into play as the match progresses. Batters will need to get their eye in to make an impact. With an average first-innings score of 239 in ODIs at this venue, the stage is set for another competitive contest. Interestingly, England chased down 314 against Australia here in 2018, which remains the highest successful run chase at this ground.

ENG vs AUS 3rd ODI: Predicted Toss Result

Out of 21 ODIs played at this venue, 11 have been won by teams chasing, while eight have gone in favour of sides batting first. As a result, the captain winning the toss may look to bowl first, taking advantage of favourable batting conditions in the second-innings.
