With over 50 games completed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, the race for playoff spots is intensifying. Currently, no team has secured a spot, and surprisingly, no team has been eliminated from contention either.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) lead the table with 16 points from 10 matches, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are at the bottom with only 6 points. But despite the standings, every team's fate hangs in the balance.


Road For Playoffs For MI

Mumbai Indians (MI), after a recent defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), face an uphill battle to secure a playoff spot. With just 6 points from 11 games, they must win all their remaining matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to reach 12 points.

However, even if MI achieves this feat, their chances of qualifying are slim. They rely on other teams like Hyderabad and Lucknow losing all their remaining matches to stay at 12 points, while teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) shouldn't win more than one match each.

Even lower-ranked teams in the league like Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT) must not exceed two wins.

In the unlikely event that multiple teams end with 12 points, net run rate becomes crucial. Realistically, the chances of all these scenarios aligning are remote, effectively side lining Mumbai Indians from playoff contention.

While mathematically Mumbai still has a chance, their path to the playoffs is fraught with obstacles. Their focus now shifts to winning their remaining games and hoping for a series of favourable outcomes across the league.
