The question of whether MS Dhoni can play as an uncapped player in IPL 2025 has sparked significant debate, especially given his legendary status and the rules governing player classifications.

Historically, the IPL rule book included a provision allowing players who had retired from international cricket for over five years to be classified as uncapped, thus granting teams a strategic advantage in player retention.

This rule, however, was abolished in 2021, leaving Dhoni, who retired in August 2020, not fitting into the current classification of uncapped players due to the rule's removal.

CSK's Appeal and franchises reactions

However, bringing back this rule is contentious. Many franchises are opposed to its reintroduction, arguing that it might distort competitive balance and financial fairness.

If 43-year-old Dhoni were to be considered an uncapped player, his retention would cost INR 4 crore, a significant reduction from the INR 12 crore he commanded in IPL 2022.

Dhoni’s potential inclusion as an uncapped player would enable CSK to keep him while preserving their core squad.

The Impact Player rule, which allowed Dhoni to play as a pure batter and alleviate the strain on his aging knees, might not be extended, complicating his role.
