Analysing whether Suryakumar Yadav can go past Rohit Sharma's runs tally in T20Is

On Friday, October 31, Babar Azam went past Rohit Sharma to become the leading run-getter in T20Is. The former Pakistan skipper took 28 fewer innings than Rohit to breach the 4231 runs mark.

It is a massive feat, but given the rise of T20I cricket, more and more cricketers are expected to pick up the shortest format of the game early on in their careers, and soon the 10,000 figure mark might also become a reality.

Just like how Babar Azam has gone past Rohit, soon an India cricketer might also break that feat and become the leading run-getter in T20Is by an Indian. The first name that comes to mind is current India captain Suryakumar Yadav.

Suryakumar Yadav entered like a storm in T20I cricket

SKY made his T20I debut in 2021 and started his career with a six off the first ball to Jofra Archer. Since then, there was no looking back as he became the joint-fastest to 2000 T20I runs for India and was touted to go past Rohit's tally.

However, 2025 has not been the year for SKY, and it is really struggling for runs. There are murmurs of his exit from the team, and chances are that the Men in Blue might get done with SKY.

Meanwhile, this article will shed light on what it will take for Suryakumar Yadav to go past Rohit's run tally or will the time run out for him before that.

SKY's run tally and how much behind is he Rohit Sharma

Notably, Suryakumar Yadav has amassed 2710 runs in 87 innings and is behind 1521 runs the hitman. Now, let's look at how many innings SKY will take as per his present average to cross that tally.

SKY's run tally as per the normal average

So far, Suryakumar Yadav has played 87 innings and amassed 2710 runs, averaging 37.12. If SKY maintains this average for the rest of his career, then Step-by-Step Calculation SKY will need approximately 41 more innings to score 1521 runs at a 37.12 average.

  • Step 1: Calculate runs remaining to surpass Rohit Sharma
  • Runs needed = 4231 - 2710 = 1521 runs
  • Step 2: Calculate innings needed at an average of 37.12
  • Innings needed = Runs needed ÷ Batting average
  • Innings needed = 1521 ÷ 37.12 ≈ 41.21 innings, so about 41 innings

SKY will require 41 innings to go past Suryakumar Yadav, which is nearly two years' time. However, cricket doesn't work on idealism, and if we see his dip in form, then at present, SKY averages just 14.

SKY's run-tally if he performs with an average of 14.50

If we go by his current average, then if Suryakumar Yadav maintains an average of only 14.50 for the rest of his career, he will require approximately 105 more innings to score his next 1521 runs.

  • Step 1: Calculate runs remaining to surpass Rohit Sharma
  • Runs needed = 4231 - 2710 = 1521 runs
  • Step 2: Calculate innings needed at an average of 14.50
  • Innings needed = Runs needed ÷ Batting average
  • Innings needed = 1521 ÷ 14.50 ≈ 105 innings, so about 105 innings

SKY will take approximately 105 innings to score his next 1521 runs at an average of 14.50 Thus, the present India captain needs to step up; otherwise, he wouldn't even get near Rohit's run tally.

SKY's run-tally if he go back to his prime-form

Even if we take SKY's best year into consideration, he averaged 48.86 in 2023. Thus, if he even maintains that, then SKY will take 31 innings to go past Rohit Sharma, which also seems a difficult task.

  • Step 1: Calculate runs remaining to surpass Rohit Sharma
  • Runs needed = 4231 - 2710 = 1521 runs
  • Step 2: Calculate innings needed at an average of 14.50
  • Innings needed = Runs needed ÷ Batting average
  • Innings needed = 1521 ÷ 48.86 ≈ 31 innings, so about 31 innings

Conclusion

After looking at every calculation, it seems that Suryakumar Yadav will find it tough to go past Rohit Sharma and score the next 1521 runs. If we look at SKY's stats, then it has dipped big time. SKY started his career with average of 34.85, then it rose to 40+ in 2022 and 2023, before significantly reducing to 14+.

Thus, even if he reverts to his best form, then it will be difficult for him to go past Rohit Sharma.
