Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who just suffered a 35-run defeat against Gujarat Titans, will go up against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday (May 12) in Match 61 of the IPL 2024 at MA Chidambaram Stadium. This will be a must-win tie for the Yellow Army in order to keep themselves in the playoff race.

Under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK were in a comfortable place in the early half of the competition. They still are, although four defeats in their previous six fixtures have made their lives a bit tougher. To turn things around immediately, all they have to do is make some bold calls regarding their playing XI.

Probably the biggest problem in CSK’s lineup is the form of Ajinkya Rahane. The veteran opener, who was in scintillating form last year, has a strike rate of 120.11 this year, that too for a paltry tally of 209 runs across 12 innings. Even Gaikwad demoted himself to solve the issue, but it did not help them rectify it.

Among other things, Mitchell Santner and Simarjeet Singh had nightmare outings with the ball in hand. Therefore, CSK might be tempted to bring Maheesh Theekshana and Rajvardhan Hangargekar into their playing XI, with Sameer Rizvi ideally being back as an impact substitute.

The changes will also allow Gaikwad to be back at the top of the unit, with Mitchell to bat at No. 3. The others are expected to be retained with the hope of registering a roaring victory over red-hot Royals.
