CSK out of playoff race? [Source: @iplt20.com]
The inevitable happened as the Chennai Super Kings lost their 6th match in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. They defeated Mumbai Indians in their first encounter of the season, but this time the tables turned as the Hardik Pandya led side have now won 3 in a row after beating CSK.
Tactically, CSK made plenty of wrong decisions and it costed them big time as the total of 176/5 was never going to trouble a strong Mumbai Indians batting lineup as Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav made light work of the chase.
Now, with 6 losses in 8 games, and just 4 points in the bag, are CSK out of the playoff race?.

(CSK points table IPL 2025)
The CSK fans can actually take a sigh of relief as despite losing against Mumbai Indians, the team is still in contention to reach the playoffs. However, the race to reaching the playoff is still tough for the team.
The MS Dhoni led side have already lost 6 matches out of 8 and they cannot afford any more losses in the IPL. If they win their remaining 6 matches, CSK will have 16 points at the end of the league stage and will have a great chance of qualifying for the playoffs. However, since their net run-rate is just -1.392, the team not only has to win their matches, but also have to make sure that the net run-rate gets better.
What if CSK lose another game?
If CSK lose another match, mathematically they'll be out of the tournament. However, we have seen that teams do reach the playoffs with 7 wins (14 points), but since CSK's net run-rate is so low, there will be very little chance that the Yellow Army will reach the knockouts with 7 wins. Hence, they need to win all their remaining matches to reach the playoff stages.
