Virat Kohli is back in the Delhi squad for the Ranji Trophy game as the India great is set to represent the team in the upcoming Ranji match against Railways on January 30. The clash will take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium and will mark Kohli's return after many years as the fans are eager to play him on his comeback.
Interestingly, there were news that DDCA also asked Kohli to lead the Delhi side for the upcoming clash, however, the stalwart gracefully declined the offer and will play under the leadership of Ayush Badoni.
Here are 3 key reasons as to why Virat Kohli declined a golden chance to lead Delhi in Ranji Trophy.
3) Not to put limelight on him
Virat Kohli will only play a solitary Ranji Trophy match and after the game will join the Indian side for the ODI series preparations Vs England. Kohli had the golden chance to lead the side on his return, but he never wanted to hog the limelight and was never interested in snatching the true right of Delhi's regular skipper.
He wanted to treat this match as any other normal game and captaincy would have put extra pressure on him.
2) Virat wanted to focus on his batting
The sole purpose of Virat Kohli returning to play in Ranji Trophy was to get some runs in his bag ahead of the Champions Trophy. Captaincy would have put added pressure on him and hence, Kohli declined the chance to lead the side.
He has been out of touch for a while now and the champion batter should utilise the 4-day Ranji game to polish his skills ahead of gruelling white-ball matches.
1) Captaincy would have disrupted the team balance
While all the Delhi players have been grinding out for the whole season, Virat Kohli coming back in and taking the captaincy armband would have created a rift in the side. There were other worthy candidates for captaincy and Kohli suddenly becoming the skipper would have disrupted the team harmony.
