'You Need To Use Him As...': Ganguly Suggests Virat Kohli's Batting Position In T20 WC 2024

Virat Kohli, who is the orange cap holder in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season has received both praise and criticism for the way he has been batting this lately. Sourav Ganguly, the ex-India captain is one of those with praises for the RCB opener.

On Friday, a night after Virat's 92 (47), Ganguly in an interview suggested that India should be opening with the ex-RCB skipper for the way he has been approaching the batting this season. He currently leads the charts with 634 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 153.51 while averaging 70.44.

Ganguly suggests Kohli's batting position

“Virat is playing exceptionally well. The way Kohli batted last night – 90 in quick time, you need to use him as an opener in the T20 World Cup. He should open, evidenced by his last few IPL innings which have been outstanding,” Ganguly suggested.

The former cricketer also said that India is going into the World Cup with a squad that has a good balance and it has the potential to put a halt to the 17-year wait for a T20 World Cup triumph.


“This is an excellent squad. I think they have picked the best possible squad. Apart from batting depth, bowling looks excellent. Bumrah is the best fast bowler in the world at the moment. We have experience in Kuldeep, Axar, and Siraj. It’s an ideal combination we have this time."

About the high scores that are being scored in the ongoing IPL season, Ganguly cited that being a result of batter-friendly wickets and impact player rule. He also urged the bowlers to upskill to tackle these sorts of situations.

"The main reasons are good batting wickets and the grounds are also not big in India. The Impact Player rule, where every team has the possibility of adding another batsman.

"The bowlers need to be really more skilful, we have some skilful bowlers around, to be more successful. Look at Bumrah, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, all of them bowl superbly in all formats of the game and in the IPL," Ganguly added.

He also credited the selectors for selecting Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik, who recently told about his World Cup desire, saying that there are better players than Karthik at this moment.
