'You Are Judged By Number Of Trophies..,' Gavaskar On Rohit Sharma's Captaincy

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, team India is yet to lift an ICC trophy. But the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup present a chance for Sharma to prove his mettle as captain. India, in fact, has not won an ICC trophy in the last 10 years, during which Virat Kohli also served as the skipper. The last time India won an ICC trophy was in 2013 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.

Recently, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was asked about Rohit's legacy as a skipper. According to Gavaskar, who has been an active commentator post retirement, Rohit's captaincy will be judged by the number of trophies he will win.

"At the end of the day you are judged by the number of trophies you have won, the numbers of wins you have. Winning these two tournaments will make him one of India's greatest skippers."

Gavaskar also spoke about team India's preparedness for the World Cup which begins in October. He feels that the lack of match winning allrounders is a bigger problem the team may face, rather than the number four batting spot conundrum. He added that India's had all-rounders when they won in 1983 and 2011 which is something that is lacking in the current team.

"More than anything else, luck of the day is very important and if you look at the teams (in 1983, 1985 and 2011), they all had top class all-rounders. You had batters who could bowl 7-8-9 overs and bowlers who could bat down the order. That was the biggest plus of those teams. You see MSD's team also: Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag could all bowl. It was the biggest plus. So, any team which has all-rounders (will hold the edge)."

Gavaskar, who played 108 ODIs for India, scoring 3,092 runs at an average of 35.13, and was also one of the best Test batsmen produced by India, captained the Indian cricket team at various points in his career, leading the team in 47 Test matches.
