'Yashasvi Jaiswal Can Push For All-Formats'- Opines Ex-Opener Following 2023 Asian Games Selection

Yashasvi Jaiswal made a dream start to his Test career with a scintillating century against West Indies on his debut. The youngster plundered a match-winning 171 while opening the batting with his captain Rohit Sharma at Dominica's Windsor Park.

The 21-year-old was inducted into India's Test side following a prolific run in IPL 2023 season for the Rajasthan Royals. He also averages nearly 65 in first-class cricket and has a Bradman-esque conversion rate of 10 tons compared to two fifties.

Jaiswal has now been rewarded with a spot in India's Asian Games 2023 line-up, where he will play alongside a bunch of fellow newcomers. However, a selection at the Asian Games would mean that the cricketer will not be considered for the overlapping 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup in India.

Aakash Chopra gives his take on Jaiswal’s World Cup exclusion

Former Indian opener and cricket expert Aakash Chopra believes that Yashasvi Jaiswal was selected for the Asian Games instead of World Cup because the youngster is not currently in the scheme of things for ODIs.

However, the cricketer-turned-commentator is confident that Jaiswal might well become an all-format player for Team India within a year. Taking to his YouTube channel, Chopra said:

“Yashasvi Jaiswal - it is a beautiful situation. The guy scored a century on Test debut, you have not kept him in the ODI list, so he is a part of the Asian Games. He is not in the ODI race currently, whether it is the Asia Cup or the World Cup. However, over the next eight to ten months, I won't be surprised if he is pushing in all formats.”

Prior to the Asian Games in China, the youngster will look to further strengthen his Test mettle in the series-deciding second match against West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. The Test is scheduled to commence on July 24.

The youngster is also part of a 15-player T20I squad for the subsequent white-ball series against the hosts, where he will likely get a game or two under the leadership of Hardik Pandya.
