Arshdeep Singh, who plays for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, has been in top form this IPL season. His childhood coach, Jaswant Rai, is very proud of him. After Arshdeep’s brilliant performance against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Dharamsala, Rai praised him for reading the pitch perfectly and destroying the top-order batsmen.
Arshdeep Singh's Coach Heaps Praises
Rai, who has trained Arshdeep since childhood, now believes he has grown so much as a player that he doesn’t need coaching anymore. Arshdeep even called Rai after the match and asked, “How was my bowling?”
To this, Rai replied with a laugh, "Arsh, you have elevated your game so much that I can't coach you anymore."
Rai was especially happy with how smartly Arshdeep bowled in Dharamsala. He said that a few years ago, Arshdeep would have gone for swing by bowling at a shorter length. But now, he knows the right length (around 6 meters) to bowl on such pitches, which shows maturity.
Arshdeep has already made a name for himself in T20 and ODI formats. He was India’s highest wicket-taker in the South Africa series and also did well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. With 99 T20I wickets, he’s ahead of big names like Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, and Yuzvendra Chahal.
Despite his strong performances, Arshdeep hasn’t yet played in Test matches. Former India coach Ravi Shastri also believes Arshdeep deserves a place in the Test squad for the England tour. Coach Rai agrees and says it's the right time for Arshdeep to be given a chance in red-ball cricket (Tests).
"Wo pak chuka hai (He is ripe now). He should get a chance to play in the red ball. He can bring the balance that India has been looking for so long," Rai said.
Since the retirement of left-arm pacers like Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, and RP Singh, India hasn't had a strong left-arm bowler in Tests. Rai believes Arshdeep can fill that gap.
So far in IPL 2025, Arshdeep has taken 16 wickets in 11 matches and is third in the race for the Purple Cap, just behind Prasidh Krishna (19 wickets) and Josh Hazlewood (18 wickets).
