On May 6, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has hired R. Sridhar, the former fielding coach of the Indian cricket team, to help improve the fielding skills of Sri Lankan players.
SLC announced that Sridhar will lead a special 10-day training camp starting on May 7. This camp is not just for the men’s national team, but also includes the women’s team, the under-19 squad, the women’s ‘A’ team, emerging players, and top club cricketers.
R Sridhar Will Closely Work With SL Teams
Sridhar will first work with the Sri Lanka men’s team, then move on to train the other squads. During the camp, he will focus on fielding drills, skill-based training, and practice sessions that mimic real match situations.
“The Former India fielding coach will begin the program with the Sri Lanka National Men’s team and subsequently train other squads, where he will conduct fielding drills, skill-specific training, and simulated match scenarios, to replicate game conditions,” said the media release.
Who Is R Sridhar?
R. Sridhar is a certified Level 3 coach by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). He was India’s fielding coach from 2014 to 2021 and was part of the team for over 300 international matches. He also has experience working with India’s under-19 team and in the IPL, where he coached the Punjab Kings (previously Kings XI Punjab).
This move is expected to raise the overall fielding standards of Sri Lankan cricket, especially for the women’s team.
Recently, the women’s team, led by Chamari Athapaththu, defeated India in the 4th match of the Tri-series nationseries in Colombo, which also involved South Africa. They beat Harmanpreet Kaur’s India team by 3 wickets on Sunday.
