'With 8-9 Players Injured..'- Rohit Sharma Picks His ‘Favourite’ Test Victory

There have been quite a few famous Test victories for India over the past thirty years or so, but none of them could compare to what they accomplished at The Gabba during their tour of Australia in 2020/21. The same view is held by India's current all-format captain, Rohit Sharma.

Five of India's most productive regulars at the time—Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Shami—were absent for various causes. To make matters worse, at a venue where Australia had not lost a Test match in 32 years, the Ajinkya Rahane-led team was going after a mammoth 328-point target.

Yet the unthinkable happened. Youngsters such as Shubman Gill (91) and Rishabh Pant (89*), ably supported by Cheteshwar Pujara (56) and Washington Sundar, batted valiantly in the fourth innings to accomplish a victory for the ages. In the process, India finished as the outright winner of the series with a scoreline of 2-1.

Rohit, who also played for India in that remarkable victory, was questioned about his favorite Test victory at a recent event in California. The 36-year-old did not even think for a little and straightaway mentioned the Gabba Test as his most treasured memory among India’s wins.

Gabba Test match is the best India has ever played. With 8-9 players injured, in most difficult conditions, youngsters coming in against strong Australia and won there which was unbelieable," Rohit was quoted as saying by Sports Yaari.

The only fast bowlers available to India in the absence of Bumrah and Shami were Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Navdeep Saini, and T Natarajan, while Sundar was their only available spinner.

Not to forget, India were bowled out for 36 in Adelaide in the first Test of the series. So it was an incredible feat to come back from there and pull off a victory like that.
